Well, according to the latest study from the UK’s leading independent job board, CV-Library, four in ten (42.9%) legal professionals admit to slacking off in the workplace.

The study, which surveyed 2,000 UK professionals, also found that despite this high number, the vast majority (90.9%) of legal professionals consider themselves successful professionally. Alongside this, legal professionals were asked their top reasons for slacking off, with the key findings including:

  • Lack of motivation (57.1%)
  • Boredom (53.5%)
  • Nobody monitors me (42.9%)
  • I don’t like my job (14.3%)

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library comments“Most legal professionals consider themselves successful professionally, but in my opinion, success includes being energised by what you do – and our results show the opposite. The legal sector is competitive and when your heart isn’t in it, you’re bound to find yourself flagging at work.

“While we all have days where we don’t achieve as much as we’d like, this shouldn’t become a regular occurrence and it’s your responsibility to speak up. Explore the possibility of training and development opportunities with your manager – it could make all the difference to your attitude.”

Interestingly, while over a quarter (27.3%) of legal professionals felt they could get away with being lazy in the workplace, this number significantly increased for senior employees, at 81.8%.

Biggins concludes: “It’s a well-known fact that when you’re starting out in your career, there’s marginal room for error and even less room for laziness, whereas senior employees have somewhat earned a little leeway. However, for your own job satisfaction and to set a good example for others, senior employees especially should always be striving for more.”
