Hayes, who joined DLA Piper from UK firm Linklaters in 2009, will replace London-based Andrew Darwin whose four-year term will conclude on May 1.
According to its website, DLA Piper is one of the largest global firms by headcount, with lawyers in over 40 different countries.
Hayes, a corporate partner who works on mergers and acquisitions, will help oversee the firm’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region in his new senior partner position.
In a statement, Hayes said, “I'm truly honoured to be elected as Senior Partner for the firm, and look forward to continuing Andrew's exceptional work in cementing the firm's values across our business and promoting good governance. I intend to focus on ensuring that our business remains robust and at the leading edge of innovation so that we continue to provide exceptional service to our clients, and that DLA Piper is a place where all of our people can thrive and excel."
