British supermarket chain Tesco has won a legal battle over its use of “fire and rehire” tactics. The decision could pave the way for other employers to use the controversial strategy.
Tesco had previously been prevented from using “fire and rehire” following a case brought on behalf of 42 of its warehouse employees, who accused the supermarket of attempting to shift them onto worse contracts. However, on Friday, judges overturned this initial ruling.
Recently, “fire and rehire” tactics have gained significant attention and come under much scrutiny following P&O Ferries’ abrupt dismissal of hundreds of workers. P&O then replaced the workers with cheaper agency employees.
British Airways also attempted to use “fire and rehire” during the pandemic but was blocked by workers.
