John Prescott dead aged 86.
Former Labour deputy prime minister John Prescott has passed away at the age of 86.
Born on May 31, 1938, in Prestatyn, Wales, he was the son of a railway worker. Prescott left school at 15 to pursue a career as a trainee chef and later worked as a steward on the Cunard Line before venturing into politics, where he made a significant impact over several decades.
He represented Kingston upon Hull East as an MP for 40 years and played a vital role in the New Labour movement under Sir Tony Blair. His family shared that he dedicated his life to enhancing the lives of others, advocating for social justice, and championing environmental causes. A former trade unionist and ex-merchant seaman, Lord Prescott passed away peacefully at his care home, surrounded by loved ones.
In a heartfelt statement following his death, his wife Pauline and sons Johnathan and David expressed that serving the people of Hull was his "greatest honour."
They stated: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, John Prescott, at the age of 86. He left us surrounded by family and the soothing jazz melodies of Marian Montgomery. "John dedicated his life to improving the lives of others, advocating for social justice and environmental protection, from his early days as a waiter on cruise ships to becoming Britain’s longest-serving Deputy Prime Minister.
"He had a profound love for Hull, and representing its residents in Parliament for four decades was his proudest achievement. "We extend our gratitude to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who cared for him following his stroke in 2019, as well as the devoted staff at the care home where he spent his final days battling Alzheimer's. "In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may consider donating to Alzheimer's Research UK. "As we navigate our grief, we kindly ask for privacy and time to mourn. "Thank you. "Pauline, Johnathan, and David Prescott."
