Tubi’s $20M Privacy Lawsuit Settlement: Are You Eligible for a Payout?
Free streaming platform Tubi, known for its vast library of over 200,000 movies and shows, is facing a $19.9 million settlement to address claims of privacy violations. The class action lawsuit accuses Tubi of allegedly disclosing users’ personal information to advertisers without consent, a potential breach of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA). Here’s what you need to know about the case and how you may be eligible for compensation.
Tubi Allegedly Violated Users’ Privacy Rights
The class action lawsuit, Gregory v. Tubi, Inc., filed on July 19, 2025, alleges that Tubi violated federal law by sharing users’ viewing histories with third-party advertisers without their consent. The lawsuit accuses Tubi of using “sophisticated tracking technology” to collect and disclose users' personally identifiable information (PII) to maximize advertising profits.
The complaint explains, “In order to maximize profits and draw in advertisers, Defendant [Tubi] utilizes sophisticated tracking technology that collects its subscribers’ personally identifiable information, including information which identifies a person as having viewed specific videos on Defendant’s streaming service.” According to the lawsuit, Tubi’s alleged data sharing enabled advertisers to better target users based on their viewing preferences, infringing on users’ privacy rights under the VPPA.
Tubi’s $19.9 Million Settlement Details
Though Tubi denies the allegations and any liability, the company has agreed to pay $19.9 million to affected users. As part of the settlement, Tubi also updated its privacy policy to provide greater transparency about its data collection, usage, and sharing practices. Tubi emphasized that the settlement agreement is not an admission of guilt and clarified that reaching a settlement does not imply wrongdoing on their part.
Class members who submit a valid claim form by November 28, 2024, could receive a portion of the settlement fund. The final amount each person receives will depend on the total number of claims, as the $19.9 million fund will be divided equally among approved claimants after fees. Filing false claims is discouraged, as it could harm the overall settlement distribution and carry legal consequences.
How to Claim Your Part of the Settlement
To be eligible for a payout, you must have used Tubi between June 23, 2021, and August 26, 2024. Eligible users in the United States can submit a claim by filling out a form before the November 28, 2024, deadline. No legal fees are necessary for participation, and claimants do not need to hire their own attorneys to be included.
The settlement’s final approval hearing is set for December 4, 2024, at 11 a.m., when a judge will decide if the settlement is “fair, reasonable, adequate, and in the best interests of the class.” Unfortunately, users residing outside the U.S. are ineligible to file claims.
You’re only eligible to file a claim if you live in the US. You can find out more information from the settlement’s official website.
