Robert Deane Rescues Two Baby Girls Abandoned in Ditch After Kidnapping in Indianapolis.

On Monday, Dec. 2, Robert Deane went outside his home in southeast Indianapolis to collect a package when he noticed two baby car seats in a ditch. Upon closer inspection, he found two baby girls inside the seats, who had been kidnapped earlier that day in a stolen car. Deane is being praised as a "good Samaritan" for discovering the infants after the car theft.

Robert Deane became a hero in Indianapolis after discovering two baby girls abandoned in a ditch following a carjacking. On the morning of the incident, Deane noticed two car seats in a ditch outside his home and found the infants, aged 4 and 5 months, who had been kidnapped earlier that day from a stolen car.

The babies were left in freezing temperatures almost four miles from where the car was stolen. Deane's quick actions saved them from further harm. Indianapolis police praised Deane, calling him a "good Samaritan," as they continue to investigate the kidnapping.

The babies were found on the southeast side of Indianapolis, almost four miles away from the location where the vehicle had been stolen. Deane, not hesitating for a moment, immediately took action. "I'd do it again," Deane said. "If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something and do something." His quick thinking likely saved the babies from further exposure to the 27-degree weather they had been left in.

The discovery was made after Indianapolis police received a call reporting a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata around 11 a.m. that morning, with the infants inside. The car was reported stolen from East Gimber Street on the south side of the city. Hours later, an officer spotted the vehicle, while Deane reported finding the infants in their car seats. It remains unclear how long the babies were left in the cold, but the timely intervention of the Good Samaritan undoubtedly prevented further harm.

Indianapolis police spokesman William Young remarked, "It's cold out here. Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside?" Fortunately, the babies were found and taken to safety before their situation worsened.

Although the police have not provided further details on the circumstances of the car theft or whether the babies were left unattended before the vehicle was taken, they confirmed the babies were safely recovered. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are asking for anyone with information about the kidnapping to come forward.

Young praised Deane's actions, saying, "He did what any good person would do. He got those infants to shelter." The police's next step is to locate the suspect responsible for the crime. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Carjacking is a serious crime, and law enforcement agencies in the United States work diligently to address and reduce its occurrence. Here are some statistics and insights related to carjacking.

According to the Council on Criminal Justice's Mid-Year 2024 Update , the carjacking rate in the first half of 2024 was, on average, 26% lower than during the same period in 2023. Notable declines occurred in April (-41%), May (-33%), and June (-42%) compared to the previous year. However, the rate for the first half of 2024 was 68% higher than in the first half of 2019. It is important to note that these findings are based on data from a limited number of cities and should be interpreted with caution.
