The incident left six others injured as chaos erupted in a classroom filled with students of various grades just days before Christmas. The student who was killed has been named as 14-year-old Rubi Patricia Vergara from Madison, according to an obituary published on Wednesday. A freshman at the school, she was passionate about reading, art, singing, and playing the keyboard in her family's worship band, as noted in the tribute.

The obituary also highlighted her close bond with her pets, Ginger the cat and Coco the dog. Her funeral is scheduled for Sunday in Madison, with the family requesting that donations be made to the school in lieu of flowers. Efforts by the Associated Press to contact the girl's family via phone and email on Wednesday evening were unsuccessful. In an interview, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that the shooter possessed two handguns but only utilized one during the incident. Chief Barnes remarked, "We may never know what she was thinking that day, but we will strive to provide as much information to the public as possible."
The Dane County medical examiner later identified the deceased teacher as 42-year-old Michelle E. West. Barnes disclosed the shooter's name, Natalie Samantha Rupnow, just hours after the tragic event on Monday. He also mentioned that while the medical examiner would release the names of the deceased, the state's crime victims privacy law would prevent the disclosure of the names of those who were injured.
