China Constructs Vast Wartime Military Command Centre in Beijing.
China is constructing an enormous military complex in the western part of Beijing, which US officials believe will function as a wartime command centre. According to the Financial Times, the new facility could eventually surpass the Pentagon in size.
Satellite images analysed by US intelligence agencies reveal a vast 1,500-acre (607-hectare) site located near the Chinese capital, likely designed with reinforced bunkers to protect military leaders during times of conflict, including nuclear war.
Once completed, the site is expected to be the largest military command centre in the world, potentially more than 10 times the size of the Pentagon, US intelligence sources have suggested.
The construction, which began in mid-2024, is a key component of the People’s Liberation Army’s modernisation strategy. This initiative is focused on expanding China’s nuclear capabilities, advancing new weapon systems, and enhancing coordination across various military domains, including land, air, sea, space, cyber, and electronic warfare.
"China's main secure command center is in the Western Hills, northeast of the new facility, and was built decades ago at the height of the Cold War," a former US official told the Financial Times.
"The size, scale, and partially buried characteristics of the new facility suggest it will replace the Western Hills complex as the primary wartime command facility."
