Man Sues Razor Giant After Shaving Injury, Wins £5,000 Settlement!
A man who injured himself while shaving has received £5,000 in compensation from a razor company.
Nick Silverthorn, 48, bought a supermarket brand razor from his local shop. However, upon using it for the first time at home, he claims it caused cuts on both of his cheeks. He discovered that one of the blades was loose and suspected the razor was defective.
This led him to take legal action against the manufacturer, Wilkinson Sword, resulting in an out-of-court settlement. Nick, who lives in London, shared, “This was not just a simple shaving cut. It really sliced into my skin. My cuts bled for over twenty minutes. I felt it was important to take action to protect others who might not be as fortunate as I was. This was a serious issue. It was about standing up to the big companies, and I did just that and succeeded.”
Nick purchased a £2.50 Men Advance 3 razor from Sainsbury’s in Richmond, London. After unwrapping it and starting to shave on Boxing Day 2023, he ended up cutting his face. He explained, “I turned on the hot tap and applied my shaving lotion, going through the motions. I began shaving one side with a stroke, then switched to the other side. A few seconds later, I noticed I was bleeding heavily on my left cheek, and then it started on the right side too, before I knew it, blood was streaming down my face.” Unlike previous shaving accidents, this one felt entirely different. Nick remarked, “The bleeding just wouldn’t stop. Since the cuts were on my face, it took me nearly half an hour of dabbing with tissues before the blood finally ceased.”
Nick noticed that one of the blades in his razor was loose when he inspected it. As a part-time landscape gardener, he remarked, “Seeing that blade sticking out made me realize it could have caused serious harm.

This wasn’t just a minor cut; it actually sliced into my skin. After thirty years of shaving, I had never experienced anything like this before.” Thinking quickly, Nick had family members take photos of the cuts on his face and made sure to keep the razor, its packaging, and the receipt as proof. He mentioned that his injuries took weeks to heal, leaving him with scars on his cheek. He also shared that the trauma from the incident resulted in recurring nightmares for several months.
“I’ve had some bad experiences with surgeries and blood in the past, and this brought it all back. I kept dreaming about blood on my face. It was a really tough time for me.” Instead of throwing away the defective razor, Nick reached out to product liability experts at Express Solicitors. They contacted Sainsbury’s, who then directed them to the manufacturer of their brand, the well-known razor company Wilkinson Sword. The brand's representatives tested the razor and, a month later, offered to settle his claim for £5,000 without admitting any fault.

Jack Klein, a product liability expert at Express Solicitors who handled Nick's case, stated, “Most people wouldn’t think to sue one of the world’s largest razor manufacturers after a shaving injury. But Nick did, and by keeping the razor as evidence, he secured a settlement. This demonstrates that if you’re injured by a product, you might have a legitimate claim, regardless of the company’s size.” A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s commented, “Customer safety is our top priority. We want to assure our customers that we have not received any other complaints regarding this product. In this instance, Mr. Silverthorn's legal team worked directly with the manufacturer to look into his experience and resolve the claim.”
