Ron DeSantis Launches Pressure Campaign for Quick Immigration Laws Amid Tensions with Lawmakers.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 46, has ramped up his pressure campaign, urging lawmakers to swiftly pass critical immigration legislation during the upcoming special session, starting January 27. The governor’s call for urgent action on immigration reform has created increasing tension with legislative leaders.
For the last six years, DeSantis has exercised significant control over the state Legislature, using his influence to push through policies that align with his political goals. However, the latest issue at hand, the need for comprehensive immigration laws, has sparked friction within the GOP-led Legislature.
Members tell voters during their campaigns that they will fight illegal immigration but then get into office and stymie our agency heads who advocate doing something about it.
Crazy to see the GOP supermajority in the House shut down discussion about illegal immigration.

As the special session draws closer, DeSantis warned lawmakers that delaying action on the issue could result in significant political consequences. “It would be very, very hazardous politically,” he stated, emphasizing that failing to act would not bode well for Republicans. He also mentioned, “I will continue to wield my power as governor as appropriate,” demonstrating his resolve to move forward with or without full legislative support.
The proposed session will focus on implementing strict immigration measures, including criminal penalties for illegal entry into the state, expanding migrant transport initiatives, and addressing in-state tuition for children of undocumented migrants. DeSantis has been vocal about his intention to take strong action on these matters, asserting, “It’s not premature. Now’s the time to act.”
The growing tensions between DeSantis and key legislative leaders such as House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton have raised concerns within the GOP. These leaders have expressed reservations about rushing the immigration issue so close to the regular legislative session in March, calling the special session “premature.”
