Walmart Reveals New Logo and Brand Refresh for 2025.
Walmart is refreshing its logo for the first time in nearly 20 years, unveiling a modernized design that honors its rich history. On Monday, the 61-year-old retailer announced the updated brand identity, which incorporates elements inspired by the iconic trucker hat worn by founder Sam Walton.
Walmart unveils a refreshed brand identity and updated logo for the first time in nearly 20 years. The new look, inspired by founder Sam Walton’s legacy, will roll out across stores, websites, and apps starting in January 2025.
The new logo features a bolder font that recalls a typeface used by Walmart in the 1980s to early 2000s, while keeping the familiar yellow "spark" associated with the brand. To complement this, Walmart has introduced a deeper shade of blue, giving the logo a contemporary yet timeless feel.
According to William White, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer at Walmart U.S., “Walmart aims to be an inspirational, digital retailer that provides all the products, brands and services our customers need and want. This update, rooted in the legacy of our founder, Sam Walton, demonstrates our evolving capabilities and longstanding commitment to serve our customers of today and tomorrow.
While the look and feel of our brand is more contemporary, our refreshed brand identity reflects Walmart’s enduring commitment to both Sam’s principles and serving our customers however they need us. As our customers evolve, we will too. Our Walmart will always be their Walmart, and our brand will always be a testament to how we innovate and change alongside them.”
The refreshed logo will be rolled out across Walmart’s various platforms, starting with the website and app in January 2025. The brand identity will gradually be introduced across the company’s 10,500 stores, which are also undergoing renovations. Walmart's last logo update was in 2008, when it eliminated the star separating "Wal" and "Mart" in favor of a single word.
This rebranding coincided with a time of declining sales, but today, Walmart is experiencing significant growth. Sales at U.S. stores open for at least a year increased by approximately 5%, and profits rose by 8%, reflecting the company’s evolving success.
Walmart is also capitalizing on the changing needs of its customers by enhancing its grocery offerings, refining product categories like clothing and electronics, and bolstering its online presence. This revamped brand identity reinforces Walmart’s ongoing mission to innovate, evolve, and continue serving customers across all channels.
The first Walmart store opened on July 2, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. It was founded by Sam Walton and was originally named Walton's Five and Dime before transitioning into the Walmart brand. This store marked the beginning of what would become the largest retailer in the world.
