Hector Corvera Sues L’Oreal Over Bladder Cancer Linked to Hair Dye Chemicals.
Hector Corvera, a hairdresser from California, is taking legal action against L’Oreal and ten other companies, claiming that his bladder cancer diagnosis was caused by prolonged exposure to harmful chemicals in hair dyes. Originally from California’s Central Valley, Corvera grew up in a family of Mexican-American farmers and spent his youth assisting with the harvests. By the time he finished high school, he was ready to leave the demanding work in the fields behind and pursued a career in hairdressing, attracted to the steady demand and less physically taxing nature of the job.
Looking back, Corvera feels that this decision dramatically changed the course of his life. In 2023, he received a diagnosis of bladder cancer. He recalled a disconcerting exchange with his urologist: "When he asked me what I do for a living, I replied, ‘I’m a hairdresser,’ and the doctor responded, ‘Hmm, that explains it.’” At the time, Corvera was too consumed by his diagnosis to seek further clarification from the doctor. Months later, a law firm reached out to him, investigating the potential connection between hairdressers and cancer, which prompted Corvera to explore the possible link between his job and his diagnosis.
Now, Corvera is pursuing legal action against L’Oreal, Wella, Clairol, John Paul Mitchell Systems, Joico, All Nutrients, and other companies. The lawsuit alleges that his exposure to harmful chemicals in hair dye products led to his bladder cancer. Filed last month by attorney Allen Smith in Los Angeles, the lawsuit claims that the companies were negligent in the research, development, testing, and packaging of their products, making them dangerously defective.
"This is not about potential carcinogens in hair dyes, but about chemicals already known to cause cancer," said Smith. Anne McTiernan, an epidemiologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, added, "Hair dyes are full of carcinogens. For hairdressers, it’s really clear that the occupation is problematic." McTiernan noted that hairdressers face exposure to these harmful chemicals through both inhalation and skin contact, raising concerns over whether standard latex gloves provide adequate protection.
Research, including studies by the American Cancer Society, has shown that those who work with hair dyes are at a "small but fairly consistent increased risk of bladder cancer." Corvera expressed how the diagnosis has affected him, saying, “It’s changed my life. I don’t feel normal anymore, constantly worrying every day about whether this will return.”
The presence of harmful chemicals like 4-aminobiphenyl (4-ABP), a recognized human carcinogen, in hair dye products has been well-documented. Research from the FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research found 4-ABP in many hair dye products, including black, red, and blonde dyes. A 2010 review of 42 studies confirmed a significant increase in bladder cancer risk among hairdressers, particularly those with over a decade of experience.
The lawsuit highlights the lack of full ingredient transparency on product packaging, making it difficult for stylists to assess the safety of the products they use. Corvera, through this lawsuit, hopes to spark changes in the hair care industry and ensure better safety standards for workers exposed to these harmful chemicals.
