New York law firm CEO killed in tragic skiing accident: 'Incredibly difficult time'.
Kevin Colwell, the founder and CEO of Colwell Law Group, tragically lost his life in a skiing accident at the Gore Mountain Ski Resort in North Creek, New York, on February 8. He was 53 years old. The law firm, based in Albany, confirmed the news on Sunday, describing the event as a devastating loss.
Jennifer Stevens, the firm's Chief Operating Officer, expressed the deep sorrow felt by all at Colwell Law Group in a statement posted on the company’s Facebook page. “This is an immense tragedy for all of us at the Colwell Law Group. Kevin built not just a business, but a family, and the loss of his presence is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working with him,” Stevens wrote.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when local law enforcement was called to the resort after reports of an injured skier. Authorities from the State Police of Chestertown responded and found Colwell in the area of the Sagamore Trail, severely injured. Bystanders and ski patrol staff immediately began life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, Colwell was declared dead at the scene.
A well-known figure in the legal community, Colwell had founded Colwell Law Group nearly 20 years ago. The firm quickly earned a stellar reputation, particularly in family law, across the Capital Region and other parts of New York. The firm’s leadership team conveyed their condolences to Colwell’s family while emphasizing their commitment to supporting employees and ensuring business continuity.
Stevens further stated, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin's family during this incredibly difficult time. The leadership team is focused on supporting our employees and ensuring continuity within the organization. Mr. Colwell will be profoundly missed, but his impact will live on through the company and all those whose lives he touched."
Colwell, an avid outdoorsman, was known for his love of camping, hiking, and skiing with his family, as well as his two dogs, Elvis and Lucy. His passing has left a significant void in both his family and professional circles, with many recalling his positive influence and leadership at Colwell Law Group.
The entire community mourns the loss of a respected leader, and Colwell’s legacy will undoubtedly continue through the firm he built and the countless individuals he helped throughout his life.
