Philadelphia Eagles Triumph Over Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 2025: Mahomes Reflects on Loss.
Philadelphia Eagles emerged victorious in the 2025 Super Bowl, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9. The win brought the Eagles their second Vince Lombardi Trophy, but for Patrick Mahomes, 29, and the Chiefs, it was a bitter loss filled with disappointment and reflection.
"I take ownership in the loss, probably more than anyone in my career. I put us in some bad spots," Mahomes said, acknowledging his role in the Chiefs’ defeat. His words highlighted his deep sense of responsibility for the result, as the team was unable to secure a third consecutive Super Bowl victory.

The Eagles, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley, played with dominance throughout the game. Hurts, who also celebrated his 28th birthday on game day, helped the Eagles establish an early lead. Hurts ran in a touchdown from the 1-yard line with just six minutes left in the first quarter, setting the tone for the contest.
Though Hurts threw an interception in the second quarter, the Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the mistake. Instead, rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass from Mahomes and returned it for a touchdown, extending the Eagles’ lead to 17-0. As the first half wound down, A.J. Brown added another touchdown, catching a pass and sending the Eagles into halftime with a commanding 24-0 advantage.

Despite the uphill battle, Mahomes and the Chiefs found some offensive rhythm in the second half. It wasn’t until nearly two minutes remained in the third quarter that the Chiefs advanced past midfield, with rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy making a pivotal 50-yard reception. A few plays later, Mahomes connected with Worthy in the end zone, marking the Chiefs' first touchdown and preventing a shutout.
Eagles had already secured the game’s momentum, and although the Chiefs added two more touchdowns in the final quarter, the outcome was already decided. The victory was especially sweet for the Eagles as they overcame the Chiefs, who had hoped to make NFL history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

This year’s Super Bowl was a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl, which had been dubbed the Kelce Bowl due to the matchup between Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and Jason Kelce of the Eagles—both of whom are brothers. In that encounter, Travis and Jason made history as the first siblings to face off in a Super Bowl. Travis had won the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2020, while Jason had celebrated a victory with the Eagles in 2018.
Reflecting on the game, Mahomes shared, “We didn’t start how we wanted to. I take all the blame for that. Those early turnovers swung the momentum of the game. That’s 14 points I kind of gave them. Just didn’t play up to my standard. Sometimes, I get to where I want to make a big play to spark us. That’s something I’ve dealt with my entire career. If I don’t show I’ll take what’s there in the game, the defenses are going to stay in the coverages they’re in.”
While Mahomes and the Chiefs will have to cope with the defeat, the Eagles celebrated an unforgettable Super Bowl win, as they proved their resilience and skill on the grandest stage of all.
