Sean 'Diddy' Combs' Lawyer Quits! Just Weeks Before Trial. Who is Anthony Ricco and why did he Quit?

Who is Anthony Ricco? Inside the Career of the Lawyer Who Represented Osama Bin Laden

In a stunning development, Sean "Diddy" Combs’ lawyer, Anthony Ricco, has announced his decision to withdraw from the music mogul's criminal sex-trafficking case just weeks before the trial is set to begin.

Ricco's move has left many questioning his reasons for stepping away from such a high-profile case and what led him to make this bold decision.

Anthony Ricco: A Lawyer with a Storied Career

Anthony Ricco, born and raised in Harlem, New York, shares his roots with the famous hip-hop mogul he was once defending.

After graduating from Adelphi University in 1978 with a degree in political science, Ricco earned his law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1981.

Since passing the bar, Ricco has made a name for himself as a dedicated criminal defense attorney, specializing in both state and federal court cases. His deep commitment to advocating for marginalized communities has earned him respect across the legal world.

Throughout his career, Ricco has earned accolades for his work on numerous high-profile cases, particularly in the realm of death-penalty defense.

His work has helped prevent the executions of many clients, including Andre Cooper, a gang member turned life prisoner. Ricco’s career, however, has not been without its controversial moments, most notably his involvement in representing some of the most notorious figures in recent history.

The Lawyer Who Defended Terrorists and High-Profile Cases

Ricco's legal career is anything but conventional. Perhaps most famously, he served as counsel in several terrorism-related cases, including those involving Osama Bin Laden and his associates.

In 2001, Ricco defended Bin Laden, arguing that the terrorist mastermind should not face prosecution, as he was not on U.S. soil at the time of the charges.

Ricco also represented Mohamed Odeh, convicted of plotting bombings against U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Thanks to Ricco’s defense, Odeh avoided the death penalty and received a life sentence instead.

Additionally, Ricco represented Detective Gescard Isnora, one of the officers involved in the controversial shooting of Sean Bell, a case that sparked significant debates over police accountability and racial profiling.

Ricco's skill in navigating high-stakes cases has cemented his reputation as a lawyer willing to take on the most challenging and politically sensitive matters.

Ricco's Sudden Exit from Diddy’s Legal Team

Ricco’s decision to step down from defending Sean Combs has raised eyebrows. The music mogul is facing serious allegations of sex trafficking and racketeering, with his trial scheduled for May 5 in New York.

Ricco filed a motion to withdraw from the case, citing “sufficient reasons” under attorney-client privilege but refraining from elaborating further.

In his court filing, Ricco stated, “Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.”

While the reasons remain confidential, Ricco emphasized that his withdrawal would not delay the trial, which is expected to move forward as scheduled.

Will Ricco Officially Be Removed from Diddy’s Case?

As of now, Ricco is still technically representing Diddy, as his withdrawal has not yet been officially approved by the court. A judge must grant Ricco’s request before he is formally removed from the case.

It remains to be seen how quickly the judge will act on this motion, but given Ricco's high-profile history, his departure will likely have major implications for Combs’ legal defense.

A Legacy of Defending the Most Controversial Figures

Anthony Ricco’s career has always been marked by his willingness to take on difficult and controversial clients.

From defending notorious terrorists like Osama Bin Laden to protecting marginalized individuals on death row, Ricco’s legal expertise and determination have shaped his reputation as one of the most skilled criminal defense attorneys in New York.

While his unexpected exit from Diddy’s case remains shrouded in mystery, his legacy in high-stakes litigation is undeniable.
