Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah: From Diplomat to Crown Prince.

His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the newly appointed Crown Prince of Kuwait, has had a career marked by a series of significant governmental roles, from his early days in diplomacy to his recent promotion to the throne. The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, appointed Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled as Crown Prince on June 1, 2024, highlighting his importance within the Al-Sabah ruling family and Kuwait’s political landscape.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 3, 1953, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled is the son of Khalid bin Hamad Al-Sabah and Mouza bint Ahmad Al-Sabah, both descendants of Kuwait's royal lineage. His father was a prominent figure within the Al-Sabah family, while his mother hailed from a lineage connected to Ahmad bin Jabir Al-Sabah, the ruler of Kuwait from 1921 to 1950. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled’s early education was focused on the political sphere, and he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Kuwait University in 1977.

Political Career

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled’s career began in 1978 when he joined Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a diplomatic attache, where he worked in various roles within the Arab Affairs Department. His diplomatic expertise saw him serve as Kuwait’s permanent representative to the United Nations between 1983 and 1989. Over the years, he held several high-profile posts, including Kuwait’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and as the country’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation from 1995 to 1998.

In 1998, he was appointed head of Kuwait’s National Security Bureau, and soon after, in 2006, he was made Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. In 2008, he took over as Minister of Information, where he focused on domestic policies, followed by his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2011. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled has played a central role in Kuwait’s foreign policy for over a decade, serving as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs from 2012 to 2016.

Ascension to Prime Minister

In November 2019, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled was appointed Prime Minister of Kuwait, following the resignation of his predecessor. His leadership during his tenure as Prime Minister was pivotal in guiding Kuwait through several domestic and regional challenges. After submitting his resignation in 2022, Sheikh Sabah continued to serve as a caretaker Prime Minister until December 2021, when he was entrusted with forming his fourth government.

On June 1, 2024, he was named Crown Prince of Kuwait, marking a significant milestone in the Al-Sabah dynasty. Sheikh Sabah’s ascension to the role of Crown Prince follows Kuwait’s succession laws, which dictate the appointment of the heir apparent by the Emir, with the approval of the National Assembly.
