UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy Announces New Financial Aid Package for Ukraine.
On Wednesday morning, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy arrived in Kyiv, where he is set to unveil a new financial aid package for Ukraine. As the country nears the third anniversary of the Russian invasion, the aid is designed to support Ukraine's energy sector, boost grain exports, and help with long-term economic recovery.
Lammy’s visit follows a significant partnership agreement signed by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer just two weeks ago, cementing a 100-year collaboration between the UK and Ukraine. This partnership aims to strengthen both nations' ties, focusing on defense, maritime security, and technology initiatives, such as the use of drones, which have become increasingly important in the ongoing conflict. The agreement also addresses the monitoring of Ukrainian grain, which has been seized by Russian forces from occupied areas.
As part of the European effort to show solidarity with Ukraine, Lammy's support demonstrates the UK's continued commitment to its ally. Since the beginning of the war, the UK has pledged €15.4 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and Lammy’s new package further enhances this vital support.
During his stay in Kyiv, Lammy is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the next steps in Ukraine's fight for sovereignty and stability. The visit reflects the ongoing global effort to assist Ukraine as it faces mounting challenges on the battlefield and in the economy.
As the war edges closer to its third year, both Ukraine and Russia continue to strategise for potential peace talks. Ukraine, for its part, has launched a second offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, aiming to retain control over territory seized last year while escalating drone and missile strikes on Russian military targets.
This aid package, alongside the continued commitment of the UK, shows that international support for Ukraine remains steadfast as the country works to secure both its immediate and long-term future.
Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the UK has pledged a substantial amount of aid to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty. As of early 2025, the UK has committed approximately €15.4 billion (around £13.4 billion) in military, humanitarian, and economic support.
This support has been provided through various means:
- Military Aid: The UK has supplied Ukraine with a wide range of military equipment, including advanced weaponry, tanks, drones, ammunition, and air-defense systems. The UK was one of the first countries to commit to sending heavy artillery and other combat gear, including Storm Shadow missiles, Challenger 2 tanks, and long-range multiple rocket launch systems.
- Humanitarian Aid: The UK has provided financial assistance to humanitarian organisations working in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, as well as aid to help civilians affected by the conflict. This includes emergency relief, medical supplies, food, water, and support for displaced people.
- Economic Support: The UK has also provided significant funds to help stabilise Ukraine's economy, including support for energy infrastructure, rebuilding efforts, and the provision of grants to help keep key services operational.
