Ángel Cabrera’s Return to Masters 2025 After Legal Struggles.
Argentine golfer Ángel Cabrera, 55, will make his long-awaited return to the Masters Tournament in 2025, marking his first appearance at Augusta since 2019.
A winner of the prestigious event in 2009, Cabrera knows exactly what it takes to secure the coveted green jacket, and he’ll be hoping to make a statement after six years away from the event.
A Long Absence from Augusta
Cabrera missed the Masters in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, his absence from golf wasn’t just health-related. In 2021 Cabrera was arrested in Brazil and later spent 30 months in a South American prison after triggering an Interpol warrant for leaving Argentina without permission.
During his time behind bars, Cabrera faced serious charges, including assault and theft, linked to two former partners. He was convicted of assaulting and stealing the phone of one partner, Cecilia Torres, and later assaulted another former partner, Micaela Escudero.
Cabrera served his sentences concurrently, and in a later interview, he reflected on his time in prison, calling it a “dark chapter” that helped him understand the wrongs in his past. "Now I can be a good person," he shared with GolfWeek.
The Masters 2025 Invitation
Despite missing the 2024 Masters due to an expired visa, Cabrera is among the 92 invitees listed for the 2025 event. As a former winner, he is granted a lifetime exemption, which means he can return to Augusta whenever he’s ready.
Cabrera also played at the Chubb Classic in Florida on the Champions Tour in 2024, which marked his return to the U.S. golf circuit.
Ben Crenshaw, a former Masters champion who moderates the event’s Champions Dinner, expressed his excitement about Cabrera’s return. “It’ll be great to have Angel back,” Crenshaw said. “The focus of the dinner will be on Scottie Scheffler, but I’m excited to see Angel.”
Cabrera’s Road to Redemption
After his legal battles and time in prison, Cabrera seems poised for a redemption arc in his golf career. His story resonates with fans who see his return as more than just a sporting comeback. The 2025 Masters will be his chance to prove that he has learned from his mistakes and is ready to compete at the highest level once again.
The Masters 2025: A New Chapter
The 2025 Masters is set to take place from April 10 to 13, with defending champion Scottie Scheffler aiming for his third win in four years. Scheffler’s remarkable performance could set him up for a third Masters victory, though he will be a long way from breaking the record held by Jack Nicklaus, who won the event six times.
