Arrest Made in Murder of 23-Year-Old CalArts Student Found Dead in Newhall Condo.
NEWHALL, Calif. A major development has emerged in the murder of 23-year-old CalArts student Menghan Zhuang, who was found dead in her Newhall condominium on February 4, 2025. Jack Minh Terry was arrested on February 16 in Garden Grove and later charged with murder, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) confirmed Thursday.
Terry is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on March 27, 2025.
Zhuang’s Death and Discovery
Zhuang, also known as Emily King, was a senior art student at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). She was discovered unresponsive by her roommate in their Santa Clarita condominium at the Vistas condominium complex in Newhall. Authorities were called to the scene on February 4 after Zhuang's roommate found her with multiple injuries to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Modica shared that Zhuang had suffered significant injuries, but the specific nature of those injuries has not been disclosed as the investigation continues.
Investigation and Suspect Identification
Investigators soon learned that Zhuang had a male companion with her the night before her death. Surveillance footage showed this individual leaving her second-story bedroom window on the afternoon of February 4, the day her body was discovered.
This footage led authorities to identify Jack Minh Terry as a key suspect. Photos from the video were released to the public, seeking information about his identity. On February 16, Terry was arrested in Garden Grove, and he was later charged with murder.
CalArts Responds to Tragic Loss
Zhuang was an international student from China, studying art at CalArts. The school expressed their sorrow and devastation over the loss of their student, offering condolences to her family, friends, and the CalArts community.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said CalArts in an official statement. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, classmates, and teachers.”
The school also noted their support in helping investigators connect with Zhuang’s family and emphasized their full cooperation with the investigation.
No Suspicion on Roommate
The investigation confirmed that Zhuang's roommate is not a suspect in the murder. The sheriff’s department clarified that the roommate is cooperating fully with authorities and is not involved in the case.
Upcoming Legal Proceedings
Terry, who was arrested in connection with Zhuang’s death, remains in custody without bail. His case has been presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, and he is now facing charges of murder. A court appearance is scheduled for March 27.
