CBP Seizes Over $4 Million in Counterfeit Designer Jewelry.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently intercepted a massive shipment of counterfeit designer jewelry, with a potential retail value of over $4 million if the items were genuine.
The fake jewelry, which was en route to a residence in Nashville, Tennessee, was seized at an Express Consignment Operations hub in Indianapolis, Indiana. This operation highlights CBP's continued efforts to protect both consumers and businesses from the growing issue of counterfeit goods.

Details of the Seized Shipment
CBP officers uncovered a shipment containing 148 pieces of counterfeit jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, and earrings bearing the trademarks of several prestigious luxury brands. The seized items included:
- 93 bracelets with Cartier logos
- 15 necklaces and 15 pairs of earrings bearing Tiffany & Co. logos
- 10 pairs of earrings with Cartier logos
- 9 bracelets with Hermes logos
- 6 bracelets with Louis Vuitton logos
The shipment, which originated from a company in China, was targeted for violating intellectual property rights by infringing on trademarks of renowned luxury designers.
Potential Value of Seized Counterfeits
Had the items been authentic, their Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) would have totaled approximately $4.62 million. The seized goods, however, were confirmed as counterfeit by CBP's Centers of Excellence and Expertise, the agency’s team of trade experts.
CBP's Statement on the Seizure
In a statement, LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of CBP's Chicago Field Office, emphasized the importance of CBP’s efforts in identifying counterfeit goods:
“Our officers and import specialists have done an excellent job targeting shipments and identifying counterfeit items,” Sutton-Burke said. “CBP protects businesses and consumers every day with an aggressive intellectual property rights enforcement program, keeping the profits from this illegal activity from funding criminal activities.”
How to Avoid Counterfeit Goods: Tips for Consumers
CBP also urges consumers to be vigilant when shopping, especially online, to avoid falling victim to counterfeit products. Here are some practical tips to help ensure you’re purchasing genuine designer goods:
- Look for reliable contact information: Avoid websites without clear customer service details, return policies, or valid contact numbers.
- Shop directly from authorized retailers: Always purchase from the brand's official website or an authorized dealer.
- Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true: If the price is significantly lower than usual, the product is likely a counterfeit.
The Growing Issue of Counterfeits
Counterfeit goods, including jewelry, continue to pose a significant threat to both consumers and legitimate businesses. These goods not only mislead buyers but also fund illegal activities. CBP’s consistent enforcement of intellectual property rights aims to reduce the flow of fake products into the market and protect both consumers and brands.
