Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler Discuss Painful MS Struggles on MesSy Podcast.
Christina Applegate, 53, opened up about the ongoing challenges of living with multiple sclerosis (MS) on the March 18 episode of MesSy, the podcast she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, 43.
The episode, marking the one-year anniversary of the show, took a deep dive into some of the more painful and lesser-discussed symptoms of MS, specifically gastrointestinal issues that have caused Applegate significant distress.
Applegate Shares Her Personal Struggles with MS Symptoms
During the episode, Applegate shared a powerful message with listeners, addressing a fan named Kelly, who expressed frustration with daily gastrointestinal symptoms, including frequent vomiting and diarrhea.
Christina Applegate empathized with Kelly’s experience, revealing that she herself has struggled with similar issues since her MS diagnosis three years ago.

“I’ve been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up, diarrhea, and pain that is unimaginable,” Applegate said.
She went on to explain that MS can sometimes cause a slowing of organ function, which could contribute to such symptoms. This insight came after years of undergoing multiple tests, which ultimately led her to discover a possible link between her MS and the gastrointestinal discomfort she experiences.
The Link Between MS and Gastrointestinal Symptoms
Applegate elaborated on how MS may lead to motility issues in the digestive system. Motility refers to the movement of food and waste through the digestive tract. For those living with MS, these processes can slow down, causing symptoms like bloating, nausea, and pain.
Applegate said that when she experiences these issues, it’s often accompanied by a painful cycle of vomiting and diarrhea, which she describes as a “horrible argument” within her body.
She emphasized that while her experience may not be universal, patients with MS should ask their doctors about potential motility problems. “Talk to your doctor about motility issues,” Applegate advised, stressing the importance of discussing unusual symptoms with healthcare providers to get the proper care.
Medical Advice and the Importance of Advocacy
Although her neurologist initially dismissed the idea that gastrointestinal symptoms could be related to MS, Applegate continued to advocate for herself. She explained that she planned to take her findings to her neurologist, challenging the notion that these symptoms didn’t fall within the scope of MS-related issues.
“I’m just saying, just think about that,” Applegate told listeners. “Because I’m in the middle of the same exact situation, and it f—ing sucks, and it’s scary.”
By sharing her experience, Applegate highlighted the importance of self-advocacy, particularly when dealing with chronic illnesses like MS. She encouraged Kelly, and others in similar situations, to continue seeking answers from their healthcare providers.
Humor and Support Through Shared Struggles
Despite the serious nature of the conversation, Applegate and Sigler infused humor into the discussion, creating a relatable and lighthearted moment.
When Sigler joked that the experience of vomiting and diarrhea simultaneously should be called the “double dragon,” Applegate playfully responded, recalling her own experience with the discomfort, “I had one yesterday. Awesome.”

This combination of vulnerability, humor, and support created a strong sense of camaraderie, allowing listeners who are also living with MS to feel seen and understood.
Applegate’s willingness to openly discuss such intimate aspects of her health journey is a testament to her resilience and desire to support others facing similar challenges.
Christina Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021, a condition she publicly revealed in August of that year.
