Grimes Reveals Autism and ADHD Diagnosis.
Grimes, the 37-year-old singer and producer, took to X on March 23, 2025, to announce that she had recently been diagnosed with both ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and autism.
Known for her genre-defying music and outspoken nature, the musician shared her personal experience in a lengthy post. She offered insight into how these diagnoses have shaped her life and how she now views past struggles.
Reflection on Childhood Struggles
In her post, Grimes explained that the new diagnoses gave her clarity about challenges she faced growing up. "Got diagnosed w ADHD / autism this year and realized I'm prob dyslexic which is why I can't spell at all without spellcheck," she wrote.
I have to say, there's this subculture of I guess "mental health" accounts that I actually think are like, extreme infohazards.

She went on to reflect on how knowing about these conditions during her childhood might have changed her experiences, particularly with regard to how she struggled with certain behaviors and habits.
She believes earlier intervention might have led her to work “so much less hard” and possibly find better ways to cope with her challenges.
Criticism of Social Media Mental Health Culture
Grimes didn't just talk about her own diagnosis; she also criticized the growing mental health culture on social media. She called out "mental health accounts" that she believes are "extreme infohazards," warning that many of these platforms can contribute to the spread of misinformation.

Her concerns were particularly focused on a recent post she encountered on X, which suggested that "excessive reading" in children could be a sign of dissociation.
For Grimes, reading is a critical tool, especially for those with ADHD. She wrote, "I think the nature of this uninformed social media mental health subculture is rly a big concern."
ADHD, Autism, and the Importance of Understanding
Grimes also took the opportunity to explain how ADHD and autism manifest in her life. According to the American Psychiatric Association, symptoms of ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
Grimes shared that her ADHD symptoms were “infinitely worse when I wasn't an avid reader,” and she emphasized the importance of viewing children’s behaviors with compassion rather than labeling them as pathological.

By pointing out these nuances, Grimes underscored the need for a deeper understanding of neurodiversity, which she feels is often lacking in discussions around mental health.
Advocating for Children's Privacy
Grimes’ health revelation wasn’t her only important message. The musician has been vocal about her concerns regarding her children’s privacy. She recently took to social media to express her frustration with the public exposure of her children, who she shares with billionaire Elon Musk.
"I have tried begging the public and my kid's dad to keep them offline, and I've tried legal recourse," Grimes said, indicating that she has even sought legal solutions to shield them from public scrutiny.

She believes the loss of privacy in the digital age is "insane" and worries about the long-term effects of online exposure, especially for young children.
A Broader Discussion on Privacy, Mental Health, and Public Life
Grimes’ candidness about her diagnoses and the challenges of modern digital life sheds light on the increasing concerns surrounding mental health and privacy in the public eye.
Her personal journey with ADHD, autism, and the impact of social media on mental health highlights the need for a more nuanced approach to these issues, both online and offline.
Additionally, her advocacy for children’s privacy demonstrates how public figures are grappling with new realities in the era of constant online connectivity.
