Facebook and Instagram, two of the largest social media platforms owned by Meta, faced a widespread outage on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025.
Users across the United States reported significant problems, including issues logging into Facebook and a major disruption to Instagram's comment sections. Thousands of complaints flooded Downdetector, a popular website for tracking service outages.
Instagram Users Report Missing Comments on Posts
Instagram users were the first to report issues, starting at around 9 AM ET. The most widespread complaint was related to missing comments on posts.
While some users could see comments on their photos and stories, they were unable to view or interact with them. One user shared their experience, saying, "I see comments, but when I click on them, it says no comments. When I try to add a comment, it disappears."
The problem affected users on both the Instagram app and website, and nearly 60% of all reports were linked to Instagram comments not displaying properly.
Facebook Experiences Widespread Login Problems
Facebook wasn’t spared by the outage. In addition to issues with Instagram, many Facebook users faced trouble logging in to their accounts. The problems began early in the morning, with many users who had logged out of their accounts being unable to sign back in.
"I signed out a little while ago, and it was fine. Now I'm getting an error message trying to sign back in!" said one frustrated Facebook user. Reports indicated that roughly one-third of the complaints related to login issues, while others faced problems with general functionality on both the Facebook app and website.
Regional Impact and Widespread User Complaints
The issues affected users all over the United States, from the East Coast to the West Coast. Many individuals from places like Ohio and Washington state posted about their struggles. One person from Ohio asked, “Comments on post are missing from Ohio, anyone else?”
The outage was not limited to Facebook and Instagram. Other platforms like Facebook Messenger, Instacart, Indeed, and even internet service provider Earthlink also reported problems, which started around the same time, indicating that the issue may have been related to a larger network problem.
Possible Cause and Ongoing Investigation
At the time of writing, Meta has not confirmed the exact cause of the outage, but the simultaneous issues across both platforms suggest a technical failure on their end.
Downdetector’s data shows that both Facebook and Instagram experienced disruptions nearly simultaneously, indicating a possible server-side issue. The widespread nature of the outage has left millions of users frustrated as they await updates from Meta.
