Lawyer Monthly will be attending LegalEx 2021 from 10-11 November. During the event we will have the pleasure of holding fireside chats with Robert Rinder and Alexandra Marks CBE, two leading figures in the legal sector.
Both chats will take place in the Keynote Theatre between 10:00 and 10:45 on their respective dates, with opportunities for questions from the audience.
Legal Aid is in Crisis - We Must Act
On Wednesday, we will be sitting down with Robert Rinder to discuss the state of legal aid in the UK. Since the passing of LASPO in 2012, legal aid services are on the brink of collapse due to successive cuts and the impact of COVID-19. A growing number of defendants now have no lawyer or access to any legal advice when facing criminal charges, which drives more hearings and can end up costing more. Is there even a future for young lawyers going into the profession as legal aid funded criminal solicitors? And what can we, the legal profession, do about it?
A life in the law: from articled clerk to Deputy High Court Judge
On Thursday, we have the pleasure of speaking with Alexandra Marks on a variety of topics including life beyond private practice, solicitor judges, diversity and inclusion. Alexandra has a storied career in the legal sector, having qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and made partner at Linklaters (1990-2003), now sitting as a Recorder and a Deputy High Court Judge. She is also a Commissioner at the Criminal Cases Review Commission and was a Judicial Appointments Commissioner for six years until January 2018. Do not miss this chance to listen to the journey Alexandra has taken through her career and learn more about her experience.
