On Thursday, the European Union’s top court ruled that Germany’s consumer protection association could bring a legal challenge against Meta Platforms Inc over data privacy.

The verdict by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) means the Federation of German Consumer Organisations can now seek an injunction against Meta Platforms Ireland in a German court.

According to the federation, Meta infringed rules on data privacy, unfair competition, and consumer protection related to free games that were available to Facebook users via third parties.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Meta said, “The underlying legal proceedings showed that there were some open questions, which the CJEU has now addressed. We will review the decision and assess its implications.”
