Instagram Star Peanut the Squirrel Taken by New York Environmental Officials.
Peanut the Squirrel, a beloved social media sensation with over half a million Instagram followers, was recently taken by New York environmental officials who claim the animal was being held unlawfully. His heartbroken owner, Mark Longo, is now doing everything in his power to get him back.
Mark Longo, a 34-year-old manager of an animal sanctuary, faced an unexpected upheaval when environmental authorities arrived at his home and confiscated Peanut. For nearly ten years, Peanut has been a part of Longo's life, charming followers with their playful antics featured in videos on Instagram and TikTok. Fans have delighted in watching Peanut enjoy waffles, don various costumes, and engage in playful activities with Longo.
The squirrel's confiscation appears to have stemmed from complaints made by viewers unhappy with Longo's content. On Thursday, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) not only took Peanut but also seized Fred, Longo's pet raccoon.
In an emotional Instagram post, Longo expressed his devastation: “Well internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness. There’s a special place in hell for you.” He added that he was in shock and feared Peanut might be euthanized.
Under New York law, it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets, including squirrels. The DEC stated that their investigation was initiated due to multiple reports from the public regarding the potentially unsafe housing of wildlife and illegal pet ownership. “The investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” a DEC spokesperson said.
Longo rescued Peanut about seven years ago after the squirrel's mother passed away. Last year, he founded P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary in upstate New York, named in Peanut's honor. The sanctuary aims to provide a haven for neglected and homeless animals, showcasing a diverse range of creatures from horses to potbelly pigs. Peanut is notably recognized as the first squirrel to gain over 1 million, and later 2 million, followers on TikTok, contributing to a total social media following of over 3 million.
In an effort to bring Peanut back, Longo has launched a petition that has already garnered over 18,000 signatures. He has also set up a GoFundMe page to help cover legal fees for the attorneys working to ensure Peanut's return to his loving home.
