Dollarama $2.64M Class-Action Settlement

Canadians who made purchases at Dollarama involving environmental handling fees (EHFs) may be eligible for compensation as the deadline to file claims for a class-action settlement approaches. The lawsuit, initiated by the law firm LPC Avocats, alleged that Dollarama failed to accurately display the prices of products subject to EHFs, such as batteries, electronic devices, light bulbs, and battery-operated toys.

Dollarama Settlement Details

The class-action settlement, amounting to $2,643,718.75, has been proposed and is pending court approval. According to LPC Avocats, the plaintiff claimed that Dollarama did not correctly display the total price of products that were subject to these fees and, in some cases, charged higher amounts than advertised. The retail chain has consented to the settlement and has also made business practice changes to improve how it displays prices for products with Ecofees.

"The Plaintiff essentially alleged, among other things, that Dollarama did not properly advertise (display) the price of products subject to EHFs it offered for sale and that it charged a total price or EHFs higher than displayed for these products or allowed by law," said the law firm.

How to Claim Your Settlement

If you made a purchase at Dollarama that incurred an EHF, you could be entitled to a portion of the settlement. The eligibility window for purchases varies depending on the location:

  • For customers in Quebec, eligible purchases occurred between December 11, 2019, and July 4, 2023.
  • For customers in other regions of Canada, eligible purchases were made between April 29, 2021, and July 4, 2023.

Eligible claimants may receive an amount ranging from $3 to $10, depending on the total number of approved claimants. Regardless of the number of qualifying products purchased, each claimant can submit only one claim. Upon approval, payments will be issued via Interac e-transfer, with a maximum payout of $10.

Deadline for Claims

The deadline to file a claim is February 14, 2025, so Canadians who meet the criteria should submit their claims as soon as possible via the class-action website to ensure they don’t miss out on this opportunity.

Dollarama has voluntarily implemented changes to its pricing practices following the settlement. "In addition to paying the Settlement Amount, Dollarama has voluntarily implemented business practice changes, detailed in the Settlement Agreement, regarding how it displays the price of its products subject to Ecofees," the statement adds.

If you believe you are eligible, don’t wait — make sure to submit your claim by the February deadline and claim your share of the settlement.
