FDA Milk Allergy Alert: Cal Yee Farms Chocolate Recall.

Individuals with a milk allergy are being urged to exercise caution after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised the alert level for certain Cal Yee Farms chocolate products. These items have been classified as the highest risk category due to the potential presence of undeclared milk.

What Is a Class 1 Recall?

The FDA's Class 1 recall designation is the most severe classification, indicating that consuming or coming into contact with the affected product could result in serious health issues, including life-threatening consequences. In the case of the Cal Yee Farms chocolate products, the recall affects a select few items—dark chocolate almonds, dark chocolate apricots, and dark chocolate walnuts—which have been found to contain undeclared milk. The presence of milk in these products poses a serious risk to individuals with milk allergies.

Details of the Recall

The initial recall was issued in December 2024 after it was discovered that several Cal Yee Farms’ products might contain not only milk but also soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, and almonds—none of which were declared on the product labels.

Since the recall, the FDA has escalated the risk for the specific dark chocolate varieties, now categorising them as Class 1 due to the severity of the potential health risks. These products were sold across several states, including Arizona, California, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Consumers who purchased the affected products online are also urged to check their pantries to ensure they are not in possession of any recalled items.

What Should Consumers Do?

For those who may have purchased Cal Yee Farms products, particularly dark chocolate almonds, apricots, or walnuts, it is crucial to inspect your pantry for any affected items. The products in question were packaged in clear plastic zippered bags and were available in multiple sizes—8 oz, 1 lb, 2 lb, and 5 lb. These bags featured a bright yellow label on the front and a small white label with a UPC code on the back.

If you have purchased any of the affected products, the FDA advises consumers to dispose of them immediately. For further information, including a complete list of the recalled items, visit the FDA website.

The Importance of Reading Labels

This recall highlights the critical importance of always reading food labels, especially for those with allergies or sensitivities. Even small amounts of undeclared allergens can pose serious health risks, so it’s vital to remain vigilant and cautious when purchasing food products.

The ongoing recall serves as a reminder for food manufacturers to ensure the accurate labelling of all ingredients, particularly when allergens such as milk, soy, and nuts are involved. For individuals with a milk allergy, it’s essential to take extra care when selecting food products to prevent any potential health risks.
