Broccoli Sold at Walmart Now Marked as Deadly by FDA.
A recent update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned consumers about the potential dangers of washed and ready-to-eat Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart.
The product, which has a best-if-used-by date of December 10, 2024, was initially recalled on December 27, 2024, by Braga Fresh, but the recall has now been escalated to a Class I recall.
Class I recalls are issued when there is a significant risk of serious health consequences, including death, from exposure to the product. The issue with the broccoli is a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacteria that can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
"Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women," the FDA's release noted.
Texas Health & Human Services flagged the contamination during random testing at a Texas Walmart. The product was distributed across several states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, and more.
Consumers are urged not to consume the affected broccoli if it’s in their possession. The UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 and Lot Code BFFG327A6 will help identify the product. If you have any concerns, Braga Fresh is available for inquiries at 877-456-7445 or via email at WeCare@bragafresh.com.
Stay safe and check your freezers if you purchased this item before the recall.
