Alec Baldwin, 66, has been grappling with immense emotional pain following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust. In a revealing moment during a recent episode of the couple’s new TLC reality show The Baldwins, his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, shared the devastating toll the incident has taken on Alec.
"I found these text messages the other day between us the day after (the shooting)," Hilaria told a friend. "He said he wanted to kill himself." Alec Baldwin has been struggling with survivor’s guilt, according to Hilaria, who added that her husband wishes he could have taken Halyna's place.

“He goes back to that day; he wishes it were him. He would change places in a second,” she said in an emotional confessional. Hilaria further revealed that Alec has faced significant health issues, including "heart problems" and multiple hospitalizations since the tragedy.
Despite the immense grief, Hilaria emphasized that the family remains committed to honoring Halyna's memory. "Halyna lost her life in the most unforeseeable tragedy. This is never something to forget," she stated. "We are reminding ourselves to honor a really incredible person for the rest of our lives."
Struggling with Career and Legal Ramifications
In addition to emotional distress, Alec Baldwin’s career has taken a hit in the wake of the shooting. On the show, Alec admitted that "opportunities for jobs have been so few and far in between because of the situation."

The actor expressed how the controversy surrounding the Rust incident has made it difficult for him to be selective about job opportunities. "A lot of people cut my throat in this business," he said, acknowledging the impact of the incident on his professional life.
Controversy Over Reality Show
The couple’s new reality show has drawn considerable criticism from the family of Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins' family, through their attorney Gloria Allred, accused Baldwin of using the tragedy to further his career. They argue that by releasing the reality show, Baldwin is painting himself as a victim while failing to take responsibility for Halyna’s death.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Allred said, “Alec Baldwin has compounded the pain of Halyna's parents and sister by taking advantage of his increased fame and notoriety by monetizing it in a TLC reality show, where he takes on the role of victim after he shot and killed Halyna Hutchins.”
The family’s lawyer also pointed out that Baldwin had never apologized to them for the tragic death of Halyna, instead choosing to profit from the situation with his show. "He has never taken responsibility for Halyna’s death," Allred remarked.
Legal Battles Continue: Civil Lawsuits and Deposition
Alec Baldwin remains embroiled in a lengthy legal battle. In addition to the criminal case, Baldwin is facing a civil lawsuit from Hutchins’ family and a script supervisor who was also impacted by the incident. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with a key motion hearing scheduled for May 29 in Santa Fe District Court.
Baldwin will also be deposed in May 2024 as part of the civil case. A court filing reveals that Baldwin will be interviewed on camera in New York on May 9, with the transcript potentially being used in the upcoming trial. "Halyna’s mother needs to hear Mr. Baldwin’s explanation under oath about what led to the death of her daughter," Allred stated.
The Documentary Perspective
While Baldwin deals with the public fallout and legal consequences, Hulu is set to release a documentary titled Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna on March 11.
The film aims to provide an intimate look at the tragedy from the perspective of those involved, including the film’s director Rachel Mason. The documentary promises to explore the human side of the incident, offering a deeper understanding of the day that changed lives forever.
Alec Baldwin’s emotional journey and ongoing legal troubles following the fatal Rust shooting remain at the center of public debate.
While the Baldwin family has expressed deep grief, their reality show and public comments have drawn backlash from Hutchins' family, who accuse Alec of using the tragedy for personal gain.
