Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, has tragically passed away at the age of 22.
The royal family announced Frederik’s death on March 1, 2025, after a long battle with POLG Mitochondrial Disease, a rare genetic disorder that impairs the body's ability to produce energy. Frederik’s father, Prince Robert, shared the heartbreaking news in a touching message posted on the POLG Foundation's website.
A Heartfelt Farewell
In his emotional tribute, Prince Robert shared the intimate details of Frederik's final moments. The 22-year-old prince passed away on Rare Disease Day—February 28, 2025—after summoning his family to his room to say his goodbyes.
Prince Robert described how Frederik, despite his frail condition, gathered the strength to speak to each family member individually. He said goodbye to his brother, Alexander; his sister, Charlotte; his cousins; his brother-in-law; and his aunt and uncle. Frederik's mother, Princess Julie, had been by his side throughout his illness, never leaving him for 15 years.

“Even in his last moments, his humor and compassion never waned,” Prince Robert reflected. “He left us with one last laugh to lift our spirits.”
Frederik’s Legacy
Before passing away, Frederik asked his father a profound question: “Papa, are you proud of me?”
Despite his ongoing health challenges, Frederik had always been a source of strength for his family. Prince Robert assured his son that he had always been proud of him, calling him “my Superhero” and emphasizing how Frederik’s positivity and determination had inspired everyone around him.
The royal continued, recalling how Frederik’s emotional intelligence, sense of justice, and compassion set him apart. His drive, social skills, and discipline were beyond extraordinary.
Prince Robert added that Frederik had been "headstrong at times," but his unyielding spirit and strength were unmatched. “Frederik is the strongest person that we know!” the royal family often said.
Battling POLG Mitochondrial Disease
Frederik was born with POLG Mitochondrial Disease, though the family was not initially aware of it. He was diagnosed at the age of 14 when his symptoms became more apparent, and the progression of his illness began to worsen.
POLG Mitochondrial Disease is a genetic condition that disrupts the body’s energy production, leading to progressive dysfunction and failure of various organs. Frederik’s struggle with this illness was difficult, but he faced each challenge with grace and humor.

The POLG Foundation’s Mission
Prince Robert expressed immense pride in his son’s work with the POLG Foundation, an organization Frederik founded to help find treatments and a cure for the disease. Through the foundation, Frederik’s legacy will continue, and Prince Robert urged readers to support the cause in his son’s memory.
The royal family will forever remember Frederik’s indomitable spirit, kindness, and unwavering sense of humor.
