Kate Middleton Returns to Commonwealth Day Service After Cancer Treatment.
Princess Kate made her much-anticipated return to the Commonwealth Day Service on March 10, 2025, after stepping back from royal duties for a year due to cancer treatment. This marks her first appearance at the service since 2023, following a challenging health journey.
The 43-year-old Princess attended the event at Westminster Abbey in London, joining Prince William, King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, and Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester.
The Commonwealth Day Service celebrates the enduring spirit of the 56 Commonwealth nations, bringing together people from around the world.
Princess Kate’s Elegant Return
For her first public appearance in over a year, Princess Kate looked elegant in a red Catherine Walker dress with a bow detail, paired with a matching Gina Foster hat. She accessorized with the iconic Queen Elizabeth’s four-strand Garrard pearl choker and Princess Diana’s Collingwood pearl drop earrings, adding a touch of royal history to her ensemble.
Kate’s Health Journey and Recovery
Princess Kate was absent from last year’s service due to health reasons. After undergoing abdominal surgery in January 2024, she began chemotherapy treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.

Kensington Palace confirmed she would not return to public duties until after Easter in March. In late March, Kate shared a message revealing her battle with cancer, explaining that she had been undergoing chemotherapy following post-operative testing.
After completing chemotherapy, Kate shared in September 2024 that she was in remission and feeling focused on recovery. In January 2025, she publicly expressed her relief at being in remission, acknowledging the emotional and physical toll cancer treatment takes, while expressing gratitude for the continued support from the public.
King Charles Also Returns After Health Setback
King Charles also returned to the Commonwealth Day Service this year, after missing the 2024 event due to his own health challenges. The King was diagnosed with cancer earlier in 2024, following treatment for a benign enlarged prostate.
He was advised by doctors to take a step back from public-facing duties, which included missing the Commonwealth Service.

In his absence, the King sent a video message expressing his commitment to serving the Commonwealth to the best of his ability. His health has been described as improving, with treatment moving in a positive direction, and he has since resumed royal duties with renewed dedication.
The Commonwealth Day Service: A Key Royal Event
The Commonwealth Day Service is a major event in the royal calendar, celebrated each year at Westminster Abbey. The Commonwealth itself is a voluntary association of 56 nations, many of which were once part of the British Empire.
As the ceremonial head of the Commonwealth, King Charles plays an important role in fostering unity among these nations, which collectively represent over 2.7 billion people worldwide.
This year’s event marks the theme “Together We Thrive”, emphasizing unity and collaboration within the Commonwealth family.
With both Princess Kate and King Charles returning to royal duties, this Commonwealth Day Service symbolizes not only their personal health recoveries but also the resilience of the royal family. As both Kate and the King resume their public roles, they continue to inspire hope and strength for those facing similar health challenges.
The full return of Princess Kate to royal engagements, alongside King Charles, reflects a hopeful year ahead, with much to look forward to for both the royal family and the Commonwealth.
