Farrah Abraham Opens Up About Undergoing Ketamine Therapy to Heal from Childhood Trauma.
Reality TV star Farrah Abraham has revealed that she recently underwent ketamine therapy to address deep-seated emotional trauma and unresolved anger toward her parents, whom she blames for exposing her to reality television at a young age.
Farrah Abraham Reflects on Childhood Trauma and Reality TV
During a March 13, 2025, interview on SiriusXM’s The Bonfire with hosts Big Jay Oakerson and Robert Kelly, the Teen Mom alum candidly discussed her struggles with unresolved emotions related to her parents' decisions during her teenage years.
“I had a full-circle moment this past winter, and it led me to start ketamine therapy,” said Abraham, 33. “I realized I was holding onto a lot of rage—rage about how my parents allowed me to be in certain environments at just 16 years old.”
Farrah rose to fame in 2009 after appearing on 16 and Pregnant, later joining the cast of MTV’s Teen Mom. She has since been open about the emotional toll of growing up in the public eye.
Now a mother herself, Abraham has vowed to take a different approach with her 16-year-old daughter, Sophia.
“I would never put my daughter in those situations or allow her to feel the kind of disconnection from me that I felt with my own family,” she said.

Cutting Ties with Her Parents
Farrah’s strained relationship with her parents, Debra Danielsen and Michael Abraham, has been well documented over the years. On The Bonfire, she elaborated on why she chose to distance herself from them.
“I finally understand why my daughter doesn’t like me talking to my mom and dad,” she admitted. “I think I’ve been far too forgiving. But I also grew up in a different situation—I was forced to endure toxicity far longer than my soul could handle.”
Abraham revealed in May 2024 that she had severed ties with both parents following intensive trauma therapy. While her mother has been a contentious figure in her life, the decision to cut off communication with her father surprised many, as the two previously had a close relationship.
After completing trauma treatment in 2022, Farrah said she felt compelled to make a clean break.
“Part of my healing meant removing certain people from my life,” she shared. “I actually haven’t spoken to my parents in two years since leaving the trauma center.”
The Role of Ketamine Therapy in Her Healing Journey
As part of her recovery, Abraham turned to ketamine therapy, a treatment known for its use in addressing PTSD, depression, and trauma-related disorders.
“When people say, ‘Oh my God, you’re famous! You’re a Teen Mom!’—they don’t understand the reality of what I went through,” she said. “It’s not just about being on TV. It’s about breaking free from a psychological cycle and learning how to be a real parent.”
She credits her commitment to self-improvement with positively influencing her daughter’s upbringing.
“I think the personal work I’ve done has benefited Sophia tremendously,” Abraham explained. “She’s seen me go through my healing journey, and as a result, she’s more self-aware and emotionally strong. I don’t have to worry about her.”
Sophia’s Decision to Distance Herself from Family
Abraham also revealed that Sophia has chosen to cut ties with multiple family members, including her late father Derek Underwood’s mother, Stormie Clark.
“Sophia has decided not to maintain relationships with many of her grandparents—not just my parents, but also her dad’s parents,” she shared. “However, she still has a strong bond with her grandfather on her dad’s side, and I fully support that.”
Derek Underwood, Sophia’s father, tragically passed away in a 2008 car accident while Farrah was still pregnant.
Seeking Trauma Treatment and Moving Forward
In March 2022, Farrah publicly announced that she was entering a 28-day trauma treatment center to address the emotional aftermath of sexual assault and long-standing psychological distress.
“There’s no easy way to say this, but I’m committing to my healing journey,” she wrote in a social media post at the time. “For too long, I’ve ignored the impact of trauma on my mental and physical health. This is my way of reclaiming my life.”
While her father Michael Abraham expressed public support for her decision, Farrah ultimately decided that removing toxic relationships from her life was necessary for her well-being.
“I’m following the guidance of my therapist and the principles of the 12-step program,” she explained. “At the end of the day, my goal is to be healthy and balanced.”
Farrah Abraham Today: A New Chapter
Despite her past struggles, Abraham insists that she is in a better place than ever. She continues to focus on her mental health, personal growth, and her close relationship with Sophia.
“She’s the least of my worries,” Farrah said of her daughter. “She’s incredibly wise, full of life, and we just celebrated her Sweet 16 with trips to Germany and London. She truly has everything she needs.”
Reflecting on her journey, she added, “I really wish I had a parent like myself when I was growing up. Sophia is lucky, and I’m grateful that I’ve done the work to give her a healthier upbringing.”
As Farrah moves forward, she remains committed to breaking generational cycles and ensuring a brighter future for both herself and her daughter.
