www. lawyer-monthly .com The global law firm Jones Day announced that Philip M. Oliss has joined the Firm's Business & Tort Litigation Practice and is based in its Cleveland Office. Mr Oliss has more than 20 years of civil litigation experience, including first chair trial experience in state and federal courts throughout the US. His practice is focused on complex civil litigation, with an emphasis on consumer class action defence, and business restructuring-related litigation. "Phil brings deep, wide-ranging experience, and a track-record of accomplishment in leading and resolving numerous trials and disputes," said Stephanie Parker, co-leader of Jones Day’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice. "He adds even more firepower to our leading litigation practice and I welcome him to the Firm." Mr Oliss’ experience in consumer class action defence includes successfully defending Fortune 500 clients in nationwide and multistate class action litigation involving allegations of consumer fraud, false advertising and product defects. He has recently served as lead counsel for a Korean manufacturer and US distributor of consumer electronics and appliances in various multistate putative class actions involving alleged violations of consumer protection statutes and other claims. Mr Oliss has also recently successfully defended a nationwide chain of bakery- cafés and the world’s largest musical instrument retailer against allegations of false advertising. "Phil’s emphasis on complex civil litigation, consumer class actions, and litigation related to business restructuring, is an excellent complement to our deep bench of litigators in Cleveland," said Heather Lennox, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Cleveland Office. "Our clients will benefit greatly from his experience and we look forward to his contributions." Mr Oliss was a judicial clerk to the Honorable Frederick N. Young of the Ohio Court of Appeals. He also has taught courses on appellate advocacy as an adjunct assistant professor of law at Case Western Reserve University. Mr Oliss has been twice appointed to the Advisory Committee to the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He also is president of the board of directors of the Cleveland Public Theatre. Oliss Joins Jones Day in Cleveland as Partner in Firm’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright announced that Josh Henderson, Jack Pembroke-Birss, Adam Smith, and Luke van Grieken will be promoted to partner from 1 July this year. The four lawyers advise in the areas of dispute resolution, construction and engineering, tax, intellectual property, class action, regulatory and investigation. The promotions follow the elevation of three women to the partnership on 1January 2019 – Claire Forster (competition), Lisa Koch (project finance) and Paulina Moncrieff (insurance) – making the firm’s overall 2019 promotions 43% female. Josh will be appointed a dispute resolution partner in Brisbane. His practice focuses on mining and infrastructure, regulatory, real estate and technology disputes. Jack will be appointed a dispute resolution partner in Sydney. He has more than 13 years’ experience in large and complex commercial disputes, class actions, regulatory investigations, and shareholder and joint venture disputes. Jack acts for corporate and government clients predominantly in the financial services industry, including defending class actions and assisting with regulatory investigations, civil enforcement action and implementation of law reforms. Adam Smith Adam will be appointed a tax partner in Melbourne. He has a particular focus on income tax, GST and stamp duty, and guides his clients through the complex tax implications of mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, divestments, group restructures, financing arrangements, property transactions and wealth management. Luke will be appointed a construction and engineering partner in Melbourne. He focuses on energy and engineering projects, major infrastructure and commercial and residential developments, and acts for owners, developers, contractors, suppliers, banks, investors and government clients. This year’s seven partner promotions have coincided with six lateral partner appointments spanning Canberra, Sydney and Perth.
