And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.” — Amelia Earhart Amidst the chatter at the Women in Law Conference last September, I could certainly feel the positivity in the air. After all, women (and the odd man here and there), were networking with some of the most established lawyers, barristers and judges in the UK, absorbing every last bit of advice their role models were handing out. But more importantly, addressing the prevalent issues in the legal sector was the main agenda for the day. Motivation was at an all-time high - to the point where I played with the idea of whether I could crack the legal sector myself - , with the conference leaving us all eager to change the legal sector, and ourselves, for the better. So, the team and I at Lawyer Monthly got to work. After speaking with the established speakers at the event, we brought together an issue that celebrates Women in Law. It is no secret that there are more men higher up on the seniority ladder than women, that women may often possess the imposter syndrome and that the gender pay gap is prominent. But while the event served as a reminder to us all that the legal sector still has a lot of room for progression it also acted as a showcase for change. In this edition, we address these issues and changes. We got in touch with women who have conquered every challenge they face, from becoming equity partner, to establishing their own firm. We showcase what law firms can do in order to retain the best lawyers and how diversity and inclusion is the foundation of a successful firm and we celebrate all those who are changing the legal sector for the better, forging paths where others could not do so and making us all proud to be Women in Law. I hope you enjoy our special edition! WOMEN IN LAW EDITION LAWYER MONTHLY 7 A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
