LAWYER MOVES National law firm Ashfords has hired partner Ian Manners to head up its Business Risk and Regulation team during a period of expansion. In this role, Manners will lead the team as it advises on compliance and risk issues in addition to investigations and prosecutions. His appointment also builds upon the firm’s pool of skills in various regulatory sectors, including health and safety, environmental, fire, transport, product safety and training standards. Manners joins Ashfords from DAC Beachcroft, where he was head of the firm’s Environmental Regulatory team and manager of its Health and Safety Regulatory team. Legal 500 recognises him as a next-generation partner, and he is a member of the UK Environmental Law Association and the Health & Safety Lawyers Association. “My experience is all about helping clients across a wide range of sectors to manage regulatory risk – whether that’s proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks in advance, or working as part of a crisis response or defence team to provide support immediately after incident has taken place,” Manners said in a statement on his appointment. “I’m excited to join Ashfords and develop further the support we can offer clients in this area as well as to contribute to the firm’s wider growth plans.” This latest appointment continues Ashfords’ planned growth across its offices, following on its recent partner hires including corporate partner Kim Hawkins, property litigation partner Warren Reid and real estate partner Robin de Wreede, among various internal partner promotions made during 2021. Ashfords Makes Senior Hire to Lead Business Risk and Regulation Expansion Slaughter & May announced the appointment of Jill Hoseason as its first ever COO in a shakeup of the firm’s leadership. Hoseason joins from fellow magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where she was also global chief operating officer. Hoseason’s appointment follows an announcement from Slaughter and May earlier in 2021 regarding plans to restructure its management team. It stated that the move was needed “given the growth of responsibilities in this area.” Following 13 years at Freshfields, she will take up her new position in February. In the aftermath of a discussion between partners at Slaughter & May during the summer, the firm ultimately decided to abolish the long- standing roles of executive partner and practice partner, instead creating a new managing partner role. Litigation partner Deborah Finkler was elected to the new position in September and will take up her new duties in May 2022. These changes come seven months after the firm announced its goal for 40% of its equity partner promotions globally to be women by the end of 2027. Global law firm Jones Day has announced that the appointment of 48 lawyers to its partnership, effective 1 January 2022. Brogan, Managing Partner of Jones Day, in a statement. The majority of the partners have been appointed to Jones Day’s branches in Washington, New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago and elsewhere in the US. Others have been appointed to its offices in London, Madrid, Munich, Perth and Paris. The full list of named partners is available on the Jones Day website. The new appointments follow on the heels of Jones Day’s earlier December announcement that Marques Hillman Richeson had joined the firm as a partner in its Business & Tort Litigation Practice. The firm confirmed that he would be based in its Cleveland and Columbus Offices. Richeson is a litigator with experience handling significant, high-risk litigation in federal and state courts throughout the US at both the trial and appellate levels. In his new position, he will supply Jones Day’s clients with litigation counsel related to mass tort and products liability litigation, commercial litigation and class actions and multidistrict litigation.
